Moisture Resistant Plasterboard | Moisture Plasterboard Slabs

Discover the robust range of Moisture Resistant Plasterboards available on Insulation4Less, meticulously designed to meet your specific construction and refurbishment needs. These plasterboards are engineered with advanced technology to provide enhanced protection against moisture, making them an impeccable choice for areas prone to dampness and high humidity.

Choosing board for bathrooms, kitchens and wet areas

The important distinction is moisture resistance versus waterproofing. Moisture-resistant gypsum boards contain water-repellent additives so they cope better with humid rooms and intermittent moisture than standard plasterboard. They are not automatically a waterproof lining for continuous direct water exposure. Gypfor states that AQUA is not for direct contact with water or permanent high humidity, while British Gypsum describes Gyproc Moisture Resistant as a board for intermittent-moisture applications.

That makes green plasterboard a practical choice for many bathroom and kitchen walls and ceilings, but the board still has to match the complete build-up. A shower enclosure, wet room or heavily splashed tiled wall may need a proprietary tanking system or a purpose-made tile backer board. Check the board, adhesive, waterproofing and tile manufacturer's instructions together rather than treating the plasterboard as the waterproof layer.

12.5mm or 15mm moisture board?

Do not choose thickness from moisture resistance alone. The framing, fixing centres, wall or ceiling system, loading and any required fire or acoustic performance all matter. The Gypfor product sold on this collection page is available in both 12.5mm and 15mm at 2400 x 1200mm. Knauf also manufactures Moisture Panel in 12.5mm and 15mm variants, although the live collection currently lists its 12.5mm 2400 x 1200mm tapered-edge board.

Can you tile directly onto moisture resistant plasterboard?

Yes, where the board manufacturer and the complete tiling system allow it. British Gypsum specifically states that tiles can be fixed directly to Gyproc moisture-resistant grade boards without pre-treatment, subject to the tile adhesive manufacturer's guidance. Joints and tapered recesses within the tiled area should be filled with tile adhesive before tiling. British Gypsum also says a proprietary tanking system can be used for additional protection.

Do not skim a wall automatically if it is going to be tiled. For Gyproc MR boards, British Gypsum gives separate guidance for part-tiled areas: where the untiled section is to receive a gypsum plaster skim, Thistle Bond-It is required before skimming the moisture-resistant board. The safest sequence is to decide the final finish first, then follow the board, tanking and tile adhesive system instructions.

Board coverage and ordering

A 2400 x 1200mm sheet covers 2.88m² before allowing for cuts and waste. The smaller 1200 x 800mm Easyboard covers 0.96m² per sheet. Measure the actual wall or ceiling area, deduct openings only where useful, then allow for the cutting pattern and site waste. Large-format boards reduce joints but need enough access and labour for safe handling.

Board size Area per board Example 10m² area before waste Notes
2400 x 1200mm 2.88m² 4 boards Used by the Knauf, Gypfor, Gyproc and Glasroc X listings on this collection.
1200 x 800mm 0.96m² 11 boards Easyboard format; live listing is sold as a pallet of 60 sheets.

Finishing moisture-resistant plasterboard

Tapered-edge boards are intended to make joint treatment easier where a taped-and-jointed finish is required. Use the jointing products and preparation specified by the board manufacturer. Where a gypsum skim is planned, do not assume that a green face can be skimmed exactly like standard wallboard. Knauf instructs users to apply Knauf Betokontakt before gypsum plaster to Moisture Panel, while British Gypsum requires Thistle Bond-It before plaster skimming its moisture-resistant grade boards in the relevant finish specification.

For tiled areas, follow the tiling route instead. Keep the background rigid, deal with joints as required by the chosen system and use compatible adhesive, grout and waterproofing. A good moisture board can still fail if water gets behind the finish through poorly sealed penetrations, corners or junctions.

Frequently asked questions

Is moisture resistant plasterboard waterproof?

Moisture resistant plasterboard is not the same as a waterproof board or tanking layer. It is made to absorb less moisture than standard plasterboard and suits humid or intermittent-moisture conditions. In shower enclosures and wet rooms, use the waterproofing or tile-backer build-up specified by the relevant manufacturers.

Can moisture resistant plasterboard be used in a bathroom?

Moisture resistant plasterboard is designed for bathrooms and other internal rooms where humidity is regularly higher. Knauf lists bathrooms and kitchens for Moisture Panel, while British Gypsum specifies Gyproc Moisture Resistant for intermittent-moisture applications. Direct-water zones still need the correct waterproofing or backer-board system.

Can you tile directly onto moisture resistant plasterboard?

British Gypsum allows direct tiling onto its Gyproc moisture-resistant boards without pre-treatment, provided the tile adhesive manufacturer's guidance is followed. Joints and tapered recesses in the tiled area should be filled with tile adhesive. A proprietary tanking system can be added where the design requires extra protection.

Can moisture resistant plasterboard be skimmed?

Moisture-resistant plasterboard can be skimmed where the manufacturer's system permits it, but preparation is important. Knauf specifies Betokontakt before applying gypsum plaster to Moisture Panel. British Gypsum advises avoiding skim plaster on Gyproc Moisture Resistant where possible; where skimming is required, pre-treat the board with Thistle Bond-It.

What thickness is moisture resistant plasterboard?

The live Insulation4Less range includes 12.5mm products and a Gypfor listing with 12.5mm and 15mm options. Gypfor's AQUA technical sheet gives both thicknesses, while Knauf also manufactures 12.5mm and 15mm Moisture Panel. Select thickness from the complete wall or ceiling specification, not moisture exposure alone.

How heavy is a 12.5mm moisture resistant plasterboard?

Weight varies by manufacturer. Knauf declares 9.5 kg/m² for its 12.5mm Moisture Panel, while British Gypsum gives a minimum 8.3 kg/m² for Gyproc Moisture Resistant 12.5mm. Gypfor AQUA 12.5mm is approximately 8.80 kg/m². Use the exact product data when planning handling and loading.

What is green plasterboard used for?

Green plasterboard commonly identifies moisture-resistant gypsum board intended for internal areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms and other humid spaces. The colour is a useful site identifier, but performance comes from the product specification. Check the declared moisture class and application rather than selecting a board by face colour alone.

Can moisture resistant plasterboard be used on ceilings?

Yes, manufacturer ranges include moisture-resistant boards for ceiling applications. Gypfor AQUA lists ceilings among its applications, and Knauf describes Moisture Panel for high-humidity internal areas. Ceiling framing, board thickness, fixing centres and the complete system specification still need to suit the span, finish and environmental conditions.

What is the difference between moisture resistant plasterboard and tile backer board?

Moisture-resistant plasterboard is gypsum board treated to reduce water absorption in humid or intermittent-moisture conditions. Tile backer boards are designed as tiling substrates and may use cementitious or other water-resistant constructions. Euroform Easyboard, for example, is a 12.5mm fibre-cement tile backer board rather than standard gypsum plasterboard.

Is moisture resistant plasterboard fire rated?

Reaction-to-fire classification and fire resistance are different. Knauf Moisture Panel and Gypfor AQUA are declared A2-s1,d0, while Euroform Easyboard and British Gypsum Glasroc X are A1. A board's reaction-to-fire class does not by itself give a wall or ceiling a stated fire-resistance period; use tested system data.
